Beautiful People

Beautiful People: Appearance Edition (Blue Team)

Well, it’s time for Beautiful People again! This time I couldn’t decide who to do so I’ll be doing all of Blue Team in one go. Which might make this post long but I’ll try to keep it from being too messy. On to the questions!

Blue Team Headshots

From left to right, top to bottom: Marianne, Johanna, Elliot, Adelle, Jackson and Cass.

1. Give a brief overview of their looks. (Include a photo if you want!)

^^There you go. We’ll go into more detail with the rest of the questions so I’ll just leave the headshots there for now.

2. Share a snippet that involves description of their appearance.

Not available, since 1) I haven’t started writing properly yet, and 2) It’s going to be a webcomic so there won’t be descriptions beside the basic crappy ones I write for characters I haven’t drawn yet.

3. What is the first thing people might notice about them?

For Marianne, likely her hair, or her height. Long pale blonde hair, though not the strangest colour you’d come across in Unity, kinda stands out. The fact that she’s several inches taller than just about any other girl (and several of the guys) you’d likely see her with also stands out. On the flip side, Johanna is pretty short, but gives off the air that she could probably beat you up at a moment’s notice. Elliot doesn’t particularly stand out appearance wise, but his expression generally gives the impression he’s silently laughing at you. Of course, the first thing people would notice about Adelle is her bright blue hair. For Jackson, probably his orange eyes or general expressionlessness. Lastly, for Cass, her metal arm is pretty noticeable. If it isn’t visible at the time perhaps her red hair or sad blue eyes.

4. What are their unique features? (Ex: freckles, big ears, birthmark, scars, etc.)

Most noticeably, several of them have unnatural hair or eye colours; Jackson has orange eyes, while Adelle has blue hair and Marianne pale blonde (which while not an unnatural hair colour usually, is odd considering the rest of her family have red or brown hair). All three of them also have blue blood because of their fairy heritage, though you usually can’t tell unless they’re blushing or bleeding. Both Johanna and Cass have quite a lot of scars in various places, not to mention Cass’s metal arm.

5. How tall are they? What is their build (Ex: stocky, slender, petite, etc.)

Marianne and Jackson are both around 6 foot (the latter being slightly taller), CassJohanna, and Elliot are all hovering in the 5’5 area (approximately), and Adelle is the shortest at less than 5 foot tall. (I have yet to make an updated height chart so all heights are approximate). Build wise, Jackson and Marianne are both tall, but Marianne is more slender. Johanna is relatively short and muscular, and Elliot is around her height but much skinnier. Cass is a bit taller than either of them and somewhere between them in build. Adelle is small and petite, giving her a rather young fairy like appearance.

6. What is their posture like? How do they carry themselves?

Marianne stands very straight, and somewhat stiff. Johanna is more confident and relaxed in her posture, though usually ever so slightly tense, ready to spring into action at a moments notice. Elliot‘s posture would also be described as confident and relaxed, but with more of an emphasis on the relaxed part. He also comes across as ready for anything, but more in a ‘smart’ way than a ‘ready to punch things’ way. Adelle holds herself in a way that oozes constant optimism, with a bouncy but delicate attitude that makes it seem like she might explode with excitement at any instant. She never seems to be standing quite still and practically skips when she walks. Jackson is more stiff and awkward, with a tendency to slouch when he stands. Cass holds herself loosely but purposefully. Almost every move she makes seems to have a certain amount of purpose and routine.

7. Your character has been seen on a “lazy day” (free from usual routine/expectations): what are they wearing and how do they look?

Marianne would dress more or less the same, but less meticulously. She’d be less likely to wear anything with collars, or at least not do up her collar to the top button, something she likely wouldn’t even consider doing on a normal day. Johanna would dress the same as she usually does, since she always wears comfortable clothing, but she’d probably go without her shoes or gloves if she’s staying indoors. Elliot is usually a complete mess on rest days. He probably wouldn’t brush his hair at all and wear rumpled clothing. If he’s been working particularly hard recently he’d probably just crash in bed for the entire day. Ironically, Adelle would put much more effort into her clothes than usual. Time off means more time off to put together the cutest outfit possible, and maybe try something new with her hair. Jackson would be more or less the same as he usually is. Cass would wear even looser, more comfortable clothing than usual, and probably wouldn’t bother to check whether her clothes actually go together.

8. Do they wear glasses, accessories, or jewelry on a regular basis? Do they have any article of clothing or accessory that could be considered their trademark?

Elliot has glasses, and is almost always wearing the exact same black jacket. Adelle has her hair clips. She wears blue almost exclusively, and likes to look cute or pretty whenever possible. She also almost always wears skirts or dresses rather than trousers, regardless of the situation. Cass always wears two wedding rings on a cord round her neck. Johanna‘s black fingerless gloves could be considered a trademark. Marianne has a tendency to dress more formally then necessary.

9. Have they ever been bullied or shamed because of their looks? Explain!

For the most part, no not really. Adelle sometimes gets snide comments about her hair colour, which she finds mildly irritating.

10. Are they happy with how they look? If they could change anything about their appearance, what would it be?

Marianne isn’t exactly unhappy with how she looks, but she sometimes wishes her hair was red or brown like almost everyone else in her family’s. Johanna and Elliot don’t really care, though Johanna occasionally wishes she was slightly taller. Adelle is very much happy with how she looks. Jackson doesn’t really think about it much. Cass doesn’t really mind either way.

That was interesting to write out. It really helped me get a better idea of the characters. Hope you all enjoyed it!

Beautiful People: Cass

Well, it’s time for Beautiful People again! This time Cass will be answering the questions.

cass headshot

Cass will be answering herself. any of my comments from now on will be in bold

So Cass, ready to answer some probing and personal questions?

Wait, what?

Kidding, kidding… (or am I?) anyway…

1. Do they want to get married and/or have children? Why or why not?

Well, I already have been married, so I guess that question’s already answered. Children would have been nice but obviously we never got that far in the end. I’m not sure how to explain why without giving a long spoiler filled explanation.

2. What is their weapon of choice?

My arm. *flexes the fingers on her right arm, which is made of metal* I can use several kinds of magic through it using crystals, so it’s pretty handy. It also has detachable fingers and a few other tools in it. I have a suit of armour that goes with it, but I haven’t used it in a few years.

3. What’s the nicest thing they’ve done for someone else, and why did they do it?

I don’t know. There are a lot of different things people would say is the nicest thing I’ve done for different reasons. Several people feel it’s probably the way I listen to everyone, and make them feel loved or something. Which I do because… they’re people? So you should listen to them? And be nice? You’d think it would be common sense.

4. Have they ever been physically violent with someone, and what instigated it?

Oh, many times. It kind of comes with the job. Why do you think I have a suit of armour and a shape shifting arm?  For example, there was that time I blasted a witch in the face with a light beam. That was instigated by the fact that she was kidnapping children and also trying to attack me.

5. Are they a rule-follower or a rebel?

I try to stick to the rules when I can. They are there for a reason, after all. But sometimes I have to break them if the rules get in the way of what’s right. So, a healthy inbetween, I’d like to think.

6. Are they organized or messy?

I do try to stay organized, but things have a tendency to… spread. At least I keep files organized. But my work space would probably be more likely described as messy than not.

7. What makes them feel loved, and who was the last person to make them feel that way?

…Oh great. Do I really have to answer this one?

Yes, please.

*sighs* Well, the first part is easy enough I suppose. I feel most loved when someone takes the time to make sure I’m okay, or just listen to me. I suppose maybe that’s why I’m careful to do so for others. Last person to make me feel that way… Maybe Amy? It used to be Aidan most often. But he’s gone now. Can we move onto the next question?

Sure.

8. What do they eat for breakfast?

Whatever’s going. Everyone who boards at the Dove Association (which is most of us) eats together. Breakfast could be just about anything. I don’t really mind what I eat as long as it’s edible so I’ll just go with whatever’s available.

9. Have they ever lost someone close to them? What happened?

*deep breath* Wow, you sure weren’t wrong about the probing and personal questions. Can we skip this one?

Well, seeing as the answer is chock full of potential spoilers, maybe that’s for the best. She’s lost her husband, Aidan, as you might have picked up by now. Other than that I can’t really give away too much about that, in case of spoilers.

10. What’s their treat of choice?

Hmm… Cookies are always nice. Especially when Luka makes them. He’s evolved into probably the best cookie maker in existence.

aesthetic cass

Well, I hope you all enjoyed that. Cass has been mentioned a fair bit by other characters but I haven’t interviewed her before. We couldn’t answer all the questions properly but hopefully that gave a bit of an insight to her character.

Beautiful People: Adelle

10928109_595959117172101_1450331761_n

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to do Adelle’s Interview this month. I was ill and a bunch of stuff happened so I didn’t have enough time to sort it out. However, I will be doing Beautiful People for the first time this year! The questions are really interesting. Anyway, here we go:

adelle_character_ref_by_purple_dragon57-da1e946

Adelle is one of the main cast of my webcomic-in-planning.

1. How often do they smile? Would they smile at a stranger?

Adelle smiles a lot. She’s more often smiling than not. She would absolutely smile at a stranger if she felt like it. Perhaps not if said stranger happened to scare her, but that’s pretty unusual.

2. What is the cruelest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?

That her mother was never coming back for her. She retreated into herself for days and didn’t talk to anyone. Everyone’s been sensitive about the topic ever since.

3. What is the kindest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?

That her mother would be proud of her, from someone that would actually mean something from. She didn’t really seem to have much of a reaction to it, but she was truly happy for the rest of that day.

4. What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

Her mother singing to her (man we’ve been talking about her mother a lot this post). For some reason it’s the only really clear memory of her mother she has, so she holds onto it closely.

5. What book (a real actual published book!) do you think your character would benefit from reading?

I don’t know about benefit, but I think she’d really enjoy Howl’s Moving Castle and it’s sequels.

6. Have they ever been seriously injured? How severely? How did they react?

She’s had a fair few minor injuries but nothing very serious.

7. Do they like and get along with their neighbours?

She doesn’t have neighbours exactly, but she gets along well with pretty much every one in the Dove Organization (most of them live in the same building so they’re kind of neighbours).

8. On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being easy and 10 being difficult) how easy are they to get along with?

About a 7 usually, I think. She’s very cheerful and friendly, though it is to the point some people might (and do) find it annoying

9. If they could travel anywhere in the world, where would they go?

Wherever her mother is (she keeps popping up, doesn’t she?). In a more general way, she’d love to visit Shinzhou some time.

10. Who was the last person they held hands with?

She holds hands with a lot of people. Likely the last person will have been Jackson though.

aesthetic Adelle

An aesthetic thing I made for Adelle

Well, that was fun. Hopefully I’ll be able to do Adelle’s interview next month. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoyed this.

Beautiful People: July Edition

It’s time for Beautiful People again, and this month it’s a lazy, Summery theme. I’ll be doing Gwen again, since Caelan and Red are usually too busy killing things to have holidays. (this is Gwen before the book begins)

Gwen full body

I finally have a larger picture of Gwen. This is her questing outfit, that she wears for the majority of book one.

1. What’s their favourite ice cream flavour?

They don’t really have ice-cream in her world, but if they did, her favourite would probably be raspberry.
2. Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What are they wearing? Who will they be with?

The closest thing to a night out would be if there was a ball or something, in which case she’d be wearing an elaborate ball gown, probably blue. She’d most likely be going with her friend Connor (who was previously called Bran)

something I imagine Gwen might wear on such an occasion

3. Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Do they wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Are they in socks that are ratty and full of holes? What do they consider comfortable and what do they consider agony?

Indoors and on formal occasions, she usually wears custom made Felician dancing shoes, since they’re very comfortable. If she’s training or outdoors she’s more likely to wear boots, as they’re far more durable. (the average Felician will go through about a dozen pairs of dancing shoes a year)
4. Do they have any birthmark or scars? Where are they and how did they get them?

She has a few small nondescript birthmarks in various places, but none really worth mentioning individually.
5. What kind of music do they listen to? Does it change depending on their mood or is it always consistent? (Feel free to share samples!)

She doesn’t really ever listen to music just for the sake of it. She used to enjoy her mother’s singing though.
6. Do they have any musical talent? Play an instrument? How’s their singing voice?

No she doesn’t have any musical talent whatsoever. Her singing voice is terrible XD
7. What kind of book would you catch them reading?

Recently you can often find her reading pretty much anything about magic and fairies, though the different accounts vary so greatly she’s almost given up on the subject. For fun she likes to read old folktales and legends (of which almost any could be true, considering the world she lives in)
8. How would they spend their summers (or their holidays)?

She always spends the summer in Felicia with her twelve cousins (all of them girls), which generally involves a lot of girlishness and ridiculous amounts of festivals.
9. It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. Ex. If they’re eating breakfast, what’s on the menu? Are they hiking, shopping, lazing around?

She’s likely training with Connor. If he’s busy or the weather is especially bad, you can usually find her in the library, reading.
10. Is there anything your character wants to be free of?

Calanthe. (if you don’t remember who Calanthe is, I wrote a little bit about her here)

Lastly, I have a couple of things to announce.

First, Wolf Cry has a new cover:

it's still not quite how I want it, but I like it better than the old one.

it’s still not quite how I want it, but I like it better than the old one.

I decided to go for a more minimalistic view, because the old cover was a bit of a mess.

Secondly my Blogoversary Giveaway ends on Monday morning (20th July – GMT), so if you haven’t entered yet, now is the time to do so.

So that’s that. Did you do Beautiful People this month? If you did, I’d love to see your post! 😀

Beautiful People and Fiction Friday: Gwen

So today I’m linking up with both Beautiful People (which I did last month as well), and Fiction Friday, which I just discovered today. Both involve a character of mine answering questions, and the character I’ve chosen to use is Gwen, the protagonist of my current WIP, Wolf Cry. Here she is, in a new picture drawn by me:

This was just a quick thing for me to get used to drawing her hair. There’ll be a full body pic eventually.

First up we have the questions from Beautiful People, which is hosted by Cait @ PaperFury and Skye @ Further Up and Further In. This week’s questions really helped me to think more deeply about who Gwen is (turns out she’s a very different person from who I thought she was when I started writing :P) Anyway, on to the questions! I was going to answer these myself, but being the unruly protagonist she is, Gwen insisted on answering them herself. So she might raise more questions than she answers. (why do you always have to be so vague Gwen?)

1. Do they get nightmares? If so, why or what of?

Hmm, I don’t really get nightmares. At least, none that I remember. Fear is for the daytime.
2. What is their biggest guilty pleasure/secret shame?

Well, I suppose I’m ashamed that no one’s really seen me as who I really am. Except Bran, of course. I mean, I know I have good reasons and everything, but sometimes I wish I could just be myself for once.
3. Are they easily persuaded or do they need more proof?

Oh, I usually need proof. After all, when everyone’s just looking out for themselves, it’s hard to tell when someone’s being genuine and when they’re just manipulating you. Of course, being able to see people’s thoughts makes it rather easier to get proof.
4. Do they suffer from any phobias? Does it affect their life in a big way?

I do have a rather irrational fear of birds. I think I have it mostly under control, but I still get nervous around anything with feathers. Which makes for more than a few awkward situations…

I still find it mildly amusing that Gwen is so scared of birds, since they’re such an integral part of her culture.

5. What do they consider their “Achilles heel”?

Oh, definitely my lack of experience. That is, in doing ‘normal’ things. People keep sighing over how much they wish they could live the ‘simple life’ but let me tell you it is exhausting. Having to ask how everything works makes it even harder.
6. How do they handle a crisis?

Depends on the crisis. I’m told I’m surprisingly calm and collected in awkward situations and such, but when it’s my fault I have an unfortunate tendency to break down in tears. I do generally pull myself together and fix it eventually though.
7. Do they have a temper?

Oh no. I can’t even fake a bad temper, and I can fake most personality traits.
8. What are their core values and/or religious beliefs?

Family is extremely important to me. Which I suppose is ironic since most of my living relatives live in another realm. I also try to honour tradition, but with Cardon and Felicia (my father’s and mother’s home countries, respectively) having such conflicting values, it’s sometimes hard to decide just which traditions to keep. *sighs*
9. What things do they value most in life?

Please refer to my previous answer. True friends are important as well. It’s a pity they’ve been hard to come by until recently.
10. What is one major event that helped shape who they are?

I suppose my parents dying was a rather major event, since if they were still alive I wouldn’t have to keep up this ridiculous multiple-personality charade. Oh! I didn’t mean to sound like their deaths didn’t matter to me. I just find… it’s easier to cope with things if I just talk about them that way.

Lastly we have the question from Fiction Friday, hosted by Ashana Lian – A Fantasy Writer’s Blog

Who does your main character respect or admire the most?

Sir Kieran, my fencing teacher. He’s just so supportive and isn’t condescending at all. He’s also seen me the closest to my true self, besides Bran.

So, that’s a bit about Gwen. Have you ever had a character who insists on taking the story into their own hands? Also, if you joined in on Beautiful People or Fiction Friday, I’d love to see your posts.

Beautiful People: Sibling Edition

Uh, so I came across this today, and decided to join in. Beautiful People is hosted by Sky @ further up and further in and Cait @ Paper Fury. It’s basically a character questionnaire thingy. This month is about siblings (yay!), so I’m doing my characters Red and Snow from that fairy-tale thing I was talking about last post (which I’ve ended up writing for Camp NaNo :D). They aren’t the protagonists (in fact, Snow only appears in the last quarter or so), but Red especially is rather important to the plot. Here they are:

Snow White – the ‘perfect’ older sister

Rose Red – the, um, sister they don’t talk about any more

Now, on to the questions!

1. What is the first memory they have of each other?
Playing together under the rose bushes outside their house.
2. Describe their relationship in 3 words.
Used to be: loving, inseparable
Now: strained
3. What kind of things do they like to do together?
They don’t any more, but they used to play in the forest, groom bears and save dwarves. A lot.
4. What was their biggest fight?
They used to have little fights when they were younger from time to time (like siblings do). The biggest ‘fight’ would have been that time Red ran off into the wild and never came back (it’s a long story). Although it was only Red who was fighting as such. Snow mostly sat down and cried a lot.
5. How far would they go to save each other?
Even with their relationship being almost nonexistent at the moment, each would most likely go as far as death to save the other.
6. What are their pet peeves about each other?
Snow always found Red’s tom-boyishness mildly irritating, and Red is frustrated by her sister’s seeming perfection.
7. What are their favorite things about each other?
Snow admires Red’s strength of character, and ironically Red loved that Snow was always kind and gentle
8. What traits do they share? Mannerisms, clothing, quirks, looks, etc?
They have few similarities, but they are both imaginative and unconventional (Snow to a lesser extent in the latter), and they have matching cloaks from their grandmother. (Snow’s is White, and Red’s is well… Red)
9. Who has the strongest personality?
Red, although Snow is strong in her own quiet way.
10. How does their relationship change throughout your story?
Not quite sure as yet, but I do think they’ll become friends again at some point in the series.
So, not exactly the happiest of siblings at the moment. Yes, they are based on a fairy-tale (well, Red is based on two), and it shouldn’t be too hard to work out which one they’re from. There’ll be more about this series in later posts, but for now I can tell you that the current name for book one is Wolf Cry, although that’s likely to change in the future.
