A Month in Review: October 2015

A Month in Review - Oct. 2015

I didn’t really blog at all in October. I had been planning on a couple of posts but I ended up being too busy. So what have I been doing this month? Well let’s see.

We went down to Surrey for Halloween like we usually do. I ended up spending most of that time reading manga for various reasons. During the drive down we discovered that Studio Ghibli films are fantastic for spending long car journeys.

There’s also been college, though only a few hours a week. Not much to report on that front. What’s really been keeping me busy is art and getting ready for NaNoWriMo.

So art wise, this month there’s been a thing on Tumblr called OC October, where you draw one of your OCs every day in October and post them online, which I’ve been doing. You can find all my posts here. I came third place in a fan art contest held by Looji on DeviantArt, and as a prize she drew Gwen for me:

My favourite artist on DeviantArt drew one of my OCs! I think I almost died fangirling ūüėÄ

Speaking of Looji, she’s founded a group where people can make ocs for her world, Gelea, so I made a character for that and it was a lot of fun.

I also made a height chart for some of my characters from one of my projects (not a book exactly – I’m not sure what I’ll do with it. I’d love to turn it into a webcomic some time but I’ve got a lot of work to do before I’m ready for something that big) As usual, here’s the best of my art this month:

Writing wise, I’ve been preparing for NaNoWriMo, which didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but I feel much more prepared than last year.

Things I Watched

First we continued the Marvel movie spree with¬†The Amazing Spider-Man, which was really good. I haven’t seen the original trilogy, so I have no idea how it compares to those movies XD Then at the end of the month we watched the sequel, which was also good, though I feel like there was slightly¬†too much going on at the end. (only one more movie to go before I’m completely ready for Civil War!)

Then, while we were down in Surrey we watched¬†Jurassic World. Again, I haven’t seen the original trilogy, and I feel like there were a few ‘nerd moments’ as my dad calls them that I missed out on because of that. Nevertheless, it was pretty good.

Anime wise, I managed to watch no less than five different anime this month, as well as the new episodes of Fairy Tail and RWBY and a bit more Naruto. First I¬†watched my first contemporary anime since OHSHC, Toradora!, and it was fantastic and adorable. I’ll definitely be re-watching it several times.

Then I watched¬†Noragami, and wow. That was probably the best anime I have seen so far. It was darker than I thought it would be, and it can be fairly bloody at times, but it was truly fantastic. I actually watched it twice, once by myself and again with my sister, who also loved it. Also that finale. I think I watched it like three times altogether XD The sequel series started this month and it’s been fantastic too so far (maybe even better than the first season).

A Certain Scientific Railgun¬†was the first anime I discovered myself, rather than have a friend or my sister suggest it. It’s actually a spin off series of another anime, A Certain Magical Index, which I haven’t seen because I can only find it in terrible quality, but you don’t need to have seen the original to enjoy this one. (there are a fair amount of references to the original though, as well as having some of the same characters) It’s a fun, creative and interesting science fantasy with, which I’d recommend. (if you do watch it, skip episode two. It’s pretty much completely pointless and considerably more inappropriate than anything else in the series)

Sword Art Online¬†was another one my sister recommended. It’s really good, though I liked the first half a lot more than the second half.

Lastly I watched¬†Your Lie in April, and it was wonderful. It’s about music, but also about living life to the fullest and how the way you live your life can effect the lives of others. It also gave me all the emotions, which I always love. You probably want to have some tissues handy if you watch it.

Things I Read

books red Oct. 2015

This month I only read one new book,¬†Champion. To be honest I didn’t like it nearly as much as the first two books in the seires. I think it was an interesting and original way to end the series, but it wasn’t really my cup of tea.

I am, however, re reading the entire Lunar Chronicles series in preparation for Winter coming out next month. I’ve read the first three (chronologically speaking) and it’s just Cress to go.

I also started reading the Fairy Tail Manga because I can. The anime sticks very closely to the manga so there isn’t much difference plot wise, but it’s really interesting to get the same story in a different medium. I’ve also been reading the Fruits Basket manga because the anime only has the first half or so.

Nothing happened on the blog this month, though I’ve apparently had visitors from Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei so that’s interesting, and apparently the search term ‘anime girl books’ frequently leads to my blog.

Elsewhere on the Internet

Fandom Stuff:

There’s been more¬†My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic¬†and we’ve had some exciting stuff going on, including the Cutie Mark Crusaders finally getting their cutie marks after four and a half seasons of crusading, and the official reveal that Shining Armor and Cadence will in fact be having a baby.

Steven Univese had some more Peridot episodes, then went on hiatus with the rest of Cartoon Network for the rest of the year.

In Gravity Falls we just had the literal apocalypse, and it looks like the show might be coming to an end soon.

RWBY¬†began Volume Three, and despite people’s concerns, it hasn’t dropped in quality and in fact has even risen in quality in some respects (most noticeably the animation).

Other Internet Stuff:

Next Month

NaNoWriMo begins! I will be participating so there won’t be much blog activity, though I do plan to do another writing music post like I did last year, and I have an award I need to do.

Cartoon Network might be on hiatus, but My Little Pony, Gravity Falls and RWBY still have new episodes to look forwards to.

So that’s what I’ve been doing all this time I disappeared from my blog. Did you do anything fun in October, and did you have a good Halloween if you celebrate it? Are you planning on participating in NaNoWriMo this year, and/or do you have anything else planned? Any books, movies or shows you think I should try? I hope you all have a great November! ūüėÄ

A Month in Review: September 2015

A Month in Review - Sep. 2015

Blogging took a bit of a backseat this month, since the holidays are over and I wanted to focus on my art a bit as well, so I only posted twice this month.

It’s mostly been pretty quiet this month. Art wise, I’m getting better with Paint Tool SAI, and I’ve actually shaded a couple of pictures, which I almost never do. The best of my art this month:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Writing wise, I’m finally getting a more coherent plot, and now I’m trying to get as much done as possible in preparation for NaNoWriMo.

Things I Watched

We watched a bunch of stuff this month. I watched another anime,¬†Fruits Basket, which was cute, funny and surprisingly emotional and sometimes somewhat dark. We also caught up to¬†Fairy Tail, which unfortunately also means we have to wait a week for each new episode. I’ve started re watching the first few story arcs with my siblings since they missed some of them.

My sister got Cinderella for her birthday, so we watched that. It was very sweet and visually gorgeous.

We liked the first Sherlock Holmes film so much we decided to watch¬†Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows¬†as well. It’s quite different from and feels much bigger than the first one, in a good way, which is what sequels should be.

I watched¬†X-Men First Class¬†with my brother. This was my first time going into a Marvel movie actually being familiar with the characters and so forth beforehand, and it’s actually¬†even more fun than going in ‘blind’. (if you’re wondering why I’m familiar with the X-Men in the first place, my knowledge comes from oldish cartoons and spending too much time on the Marvel wiki.) It’s a little darker than the average Marvel movie, but still very enjoyable.

Continuing the Marvel spree (which started December last year), we finally watched¬†Guardians of the Galaxy, which doesn’t take itself too seriously and is hilarious as a result.

Lastly, I watched Howl’s Moving Castle¬†and liked it so much I bought it literally a couple of days after seeing it, along with¬†My¬†Neighbor¬†Totoro¬†(the collection begins…) It’s a really gorgeous film, like the other Miyazaki films. Apparently the book is even better, but annoyingly the library doesn’t have it. (wow. Big surprise there. Darn you Cumbria libraries.)

We’ve also been watching more of the other series we’re following, and my brother and I have¬†been re-watching¬†Beyblade (an oldish, badly dubbed anime we were obsessed with when we were younger – come to think of it it was technically the first anime I ever watched) for nostalgic reasons.

Things I Read

books read Sep. 2015

I didn’t read very much this month, partly because I’ve been doing other things and partly because I’m running out of books to read that the library actually has.

I’ve been reading a fair bit of¬†Sherlock Holmes, partly inspired by watching the movies and remembering I’ve only read one before. (this happens a lot with me)

I finally finished the Gallagher Girls books with¬†United We Spy. I’ve heard Ally Carter has another series besides this one and Heist Society, so I might check that out.

I also read¬†Prodigy, which I loved. I awkwardly thought it was the last book in the series when I first read it. It’s not. So that’s awkward. I love how it decided to do something differently from the other dystopians I’ve read. (I won’t mention what it did because of spoilers)

On the Blog

Like I said, I only posted twice this month. (excluding the Month in Review post for August)

I was nominated for the Infinity Dreams award, and did the Curious Wren Bookish Tag, and I did my Favourite Female Characters for Top Ten Tuesday.

Elsewhere on the Internet

Fandom Stuff:

My Little Pony¬†returned with three Rarity episodes in a row, including several new characters and a reappearance from Coco Pommell. The third Equestria Girls film, The Friendship Games, came out last Saturday, and it’s much better scripted than the first two films. Still not fantastic, but getting closer to the level of the show. The Halloween Special, Scare Master, was accidentally released early, though it was taken back down quickly. I’ve decided not to watch it till it officially airs though.

Steven Universe also returned, and we got character development for several side and minor characters, as well as more information on the Homeworld and an episode that actually got me to make fangirling noises over Peridot, which has never happened to me before. (seriously, she was so adorable in Catch and Release)

There’s also been more¬†Gravity Falls, which has had one plot development episode and one character development/random silliness episode. It’s also been hinted that the show will be coming to an end soon, so the fandom is freaking out big time.

Star vs. the Forces of Evil¬†has started to become surprisingly mysterious and deep, so that fandom’s freaking out too.

Other Internet Stuff:

  • How It Should Have Ended¬†celebrated it’s 10th anniversary with a silly, nerdy Taylor Swift parody:

Next Month

I’m starting College! It’ll only be a couple of days a week at first, because the college is so awesome it’s actually okay with letting me start slowly because of my social anxiety.

NaNoWriMo is on the way, so I’ll be running around trying to have Wolf Cry ready to be written by then.

There’s Halloween, of course, though I don’t think we’ll be doing anything in particular for it.

So that’s what I did this month. What did you do in September? Have anything planned for October? Which animes do you think would be good for me to try next? (nothing gory please) Any books you think I should try?

A Month in Review: August 2015

A Month in Review - Aug. 2015

Once again, I didn’t get to post half the stuff I wanted to in August. A lot more stuff happened than I’d expected. Hopefully I’ll be posting a lot more this month. So, what have I been doing? Let’s take a look.

We had holidays for the whole month (yay!). The first week we went down to Surrey, which was kind of boring mostly, at least for me who only really had one friend I actually wanted to see. A lot of time was spent watching Fairy Tail when I could get the internet to work.

Our grandparents came to visit for a couple of weeks, the neighbors went away for a while so we looked after their dog, and my siblings had a lot of sleepovers. My best friend came up to visit, which was a lot of fun.

Art wise, I’ve gotten a lot better with Paint Tool SAI, and I’ve nearly finished drawing all the characters for my MLP NextGen. I also designed a new icon for myself on everything, which you can read more about here. I also redesigned Gwen’s appearance almost completely, and made an info sheet for how fairies work in Wolf Cry. You can find all the Wolf Cry related stuff (as well as my pony OCs) here. The best of my art this week:

Writing wise, I’m nearly ready to start writing again, so hopefully I’ll be able to start some time this September.

Things I Watched

I watched¬†Ocean’s Eleven¬†while we were down in Surrey because it was pretty much the only movie worth watching we could find. It was awesome. I’m starting to think I really like heist-type stuff.

While we were in Surrey we also got to see Inside Out in the cinema and it was both creative and adorable. It seemed to drag on for a bit in the second half though.

My friend brought Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol up with her so we watched that last weekend. It was very good, even without having seen any of the previous films beforehand.

I watched Sherlock Holmes last night, and it was rather dark and very awesome.

(hey look I summed up every film in a couple of sentences instead of rambling this time. Not sure if that counts as good or bad. All of the above are worth watching, by the way)

We also watched bits of a few different animes, and we’ve very nearly caught up to Fairy Tail, which has continued to become even more amazing.

Things I Read

books read aug. 2015

Once again I kept forgetting to order new books into the library, so I only read three real books altogether in August. I’ve read 51 books altogether this year so far, meaning I’ve completed the reading challenge I set myself! I might extend it to 75 books.

I got A Wish Made of Glass for free in return for an honest review, and I really liked some parts and liked other parts less.

I borrowed Legend from the library on a whim, and it was very good.

I’ve finally reached the end of the Percy Jackson books with The Blood of Olympus. It was a satisfying end to the series, and I’ll probably re read all the books some time. In the mean time I’m looking forwards to the start of a new Riordan series in October, this time featuring Norse Mythology.

On the Blog

As I said, I didn’t post much this month. I did manage to write my first ever review, for A Wish Made of Glass. I also participated in Top Ten Tuesday, this time with the authors I’ve read the most books from.

Elsewhere on the Internet

Fandom Stuff:

Steven Universe¬†went on an unexpected month long hiatus, for ‘boring production reasons’ (that’s literally the reason they gave)

Gravity Falls has had a couple of new episodes, and a hint that Bill Cipher will return in the near future.

RWBY¬†volume three is in production! (this actually happened a couple of months ago but I didn’t find out till recently so I’m including it anyway)

On Other Blogs:

Lastly, I’m on Tumblr now, so you can find me here.

Next Month

The Summer Holidays end next week (I think).

both My Little Pony and Steven Universe come back next month, and there’s more Gravity Falls on the way.

Also I¬†think¬†I’m starting College some time in September, but we’re not quite sure when yet.

Hey look I managed to mostly avoid rambling this time! What did you do in August? Are you looking forwards to the coming month, or not so much? Have you read/seen any of the things I did this last month?
